Arrive at the prearranged meeting point location in Maketū and join Skipper Deon Muir, for a day out exploring the moana (ocean), whilst immersing yourself on a personalised private guided fishing experience.
Following a safety briefing, board your awaiting vessel, venturing across the Maketū bar, to spend time on the ocean. Enjoy the knowledgeable exchange as Deon discusses the deep connection to Te Ao Māori and his role as kaitiaki – guardian and caretaker of the resource and environment within the Maketū marine catchment.
Learn about the variety of fish, crustacean and shellfish species abundant in the catchment and try your hand at fishing, perfecting your technique with every cast, as you ‘catch and collect’.
Learn to fillet fish as your catch is prepared and packaged for you to takeaway.

Stay a while in our purpose-built outdoor cooking area as we sit around the fire celebrating the day.
Sample Deon's mums famous Maketū curried mussel chowder with fried bread, grilled Maketū mussels with Muirs Tours secret sauce and fillet your own fish for the freshest fish’n’chips in town.
With a smoke house at your fingertips, create your own manuka smoked fish or take in the learnings from Deon’s time in Japan as he prepares sashimi the old fashion way.
